History and Legends

Historically, the temple dates back to the 18th century and was developed by the rulers of the Wanaparthy Samsthanam on the banks of the picturesque Ratna Pushkarini Lake. It reflects the influence of the Vijayanagara architectural tradition. 

According to local folklore, Emperor Sri Krishnadevaraya wished to build a temple similar to the famous Srirangam Temple in Tamil Nadu after being deeply inspired by it. It is believed that Lord Ranganayaka appeared in the king's dream and guided him to the hidden idol through a divine eagle, leading to the establishment of this sacred shrine. While this story is cherished by devotees, it is regarded as a traditional legend rather than a historically verified event. 

The temple showcases classic Vijayanagara-style architecture, featuring beautifully carved pillars, spacious mandapas, an impressive gopuram, and a peaceful temple tank that enhances its spiritual ambiance. The main deity, Lord Ranganayaka Swamy, is worshipped in the reclining posture on Adishesha, making the temple especially significant for devotees of Lord Vishnu. 

An interesting fact is that the temple attracts devotees not only from Telangana but also from neighbouring Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu. It is also well known for its grand Brahmotsavam, Rathotsavam, Sankranti celebrations, and Vaikuntha Ekadashi festivities, when thousands of pilgrims gather to seek the Lord's blessings. 

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is October to February, when the weather is pleasant. Festival seasons such as Vaikuntha Ekadashi, Brahmotsavam, and Rathotsavam offer a vibrant spiritual experience but can be quite crowded. 

How to Reach

🚗 By Road: Around 10 km from Pebbair, 25 km from Wanaparthy, and approximately 160 km from Hyderabad. The temple is well connected by road. 

🚆 By Rail: The nearest major railway station is Gadwal (about 40 km). Local transport is available from the station to the temple. 

✈️ By Air: The nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad, located about 120 km away.
